Students may either select from one of the following Specialty Areas, or in consultation with the advisor, design their own specialty area. Advanced practica will be designed to meet objectives within each Specialty Area. Some Specialty Areas include

- Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (Children)
- Expressive Arts
- Gerontology
- Health Care
- Mental Health
- Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
- Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music
Students in the Master of Music Therapy degree program may apply for admission to dual master's degree programs with Clinical Mental Health Counseling or Marriage and Family Therapy. Clinical courses completed in those areas will fulfill specialty area course requirements for the Master of Music Therapy degree.
